Liparit Avetisyan

Alfredo Germont

"Remember the name Liparit Avetisyan—that way you'll be one step ahead when he becomes a star." His bel canto has a wonderfully effortless flow, with brilliant, sweet high notes and the trademark "tenor sob." The colorfulness with which he uses this technique takes the audience's breath away.

A sensational, stylish duke – with charisma but also elegance. An aristocratic bastard who bears something of the young Pavarotti in his demeanor and Italian tenor voice. His Alfredo is excited and impulsive, with a fresh voice and passionate charisma. His singing possesses an exceptionally poetic quality that can deeply enchant. Liparit's "Un Di Felice" is wonderful in its loving warmth and tenderness. He also shines in comic roles. He has been called the funniest Nemorino, captivating the audience's hearts – like Charlie Chaplin in glorious Technicolor and the absolute highlight of the performance. This is how renowned music critics and prominent figures in the opera world describe Liparit Avetisyan.

Armenian tenor Liparit Avetisyan made his European debut in autumn 2016 as Fenton in a new production of Falstaff at the Cologne Opera and has since been considered one of the most exciting lyric tenors of his generation. His Cologne debut was quickly followed by international engagements at leading venues such as the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Berlin State Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Zurich Opera, Opera Australia, the Bavarian State Opera, the Semperoper Dresden, the Frankfurt Opera, the Hamburg State Opera, the Den Norske Opera in Oslo, the Opéra du Rhin in Strasbourg, the Seattle Opera, and the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. He was also a guest artist at the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Theatres from 2017 to 2019.

His roles include Alfredo in La Traviata, Rodolfo in La Bohème, the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto, Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore, Des Grieux in Manon, Don José in Carmen, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, Count Almaviva in The Barber of Seville, Vaudémont in Iolanta and Lensky in Eugene Onegin.

Recent highlights include Alfredo and the Duke of Mantua at the Royal Opera House in London and Vaudémont in Iolanta with the Berlin Philharmonic. He made his debut as Vaudémont at the Baden-Baden Easter Festival and as the Duke at Den Norske Opera in Oslo. Revivals are planned as Rodolfo in La Bohème in Dresden and as the Duke in Rigoletto in Zurich.

In 2020, Avetisyan recorded the role of Cassio in Verdi's Otello for Sony Classical—with Jonas Kaufmann in the title role, Carlos Álvarez as Iago, and Federica Lombardi as Desdemona—under the baton of Sir Antonio Pappano with the Orchestra e Coro dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. BBC Music Magazine described Liparit Avetisyan as Cassio as "the most exquisite, youthfully heroic tone one could wish for." The album won the 2021 Opus Klassik award for "Opera Recording of the Year" (up to the 19th century).

He has also been active as a concert soloist in recent years, appearing at the 21st International Music Festival Stars of the White Nights in St. Petersburg, the Easter Festival in Moscow, the Beethoven Festival in Poland, the Mustonen Festival in Estonia, and the Midem Festival in France. He has also performed at benefit concerts commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide with Evgeni Kissin at Carnegie Hall and the Music Center at Strathmore (Washington).

The tenor has worked with the most important conductors of our time, including Sir Antonio Pappano, Daniel Oren, Kirill Petrenko, Fabio Luisi, Antonello Manacorda, Bertrand de Billy, as well as with opera stars such as Pretty Yende, Federica Lombardi, Sonya Yoncheva, Lisette Oropesa, Ailyn Pérez, Plácido Domingo, Carlos Álvarez, Jonas Kaufmann and many others.

Since 2013, Avetisyan has been a leading soloist at the Armenian National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater. There, his roles have included Alfredo, Don José, and the Young Gypsy in Rachmaninoff's Aleko. He made his debut as the Duke in Rigoletto, sang Rodolfo in La Bohème, Count Almaviva in The Barber of Seville, and the tenor roles in the Requiems of Verdi and Mozart and in Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, together with the Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Eduard Topchyan.

Born in Yerevan, Liparit Avetisyan studied at the Tchaikovsky State Conservatory in Moscow from 2008 to 2011 and later continued his studies at the Komitas Conservatory in Yerevan with Professor Rafayel Hakobyants. During his studies, he won second prize at both the Maria Biesu Competition and the III Muslim Magomaev International Vocal Competition. In 2017, he was awarded the prestigious Golden Masks Theatre Prize for Best Opera Actor for the role of Des Grieux in Massenet's Manon. He has also received the Onegin Opera Prize for Best Guest Artist (Saint Petersburg, 2016), the Artavazd Theatre Prize for Best Actor of the Year (Yerevan, 2016), and the Swallow Music Award for Best Opera Singer of the Year (Yerevan, 2017). Liparit Avetisyan is Honored Artist of the Republic of Armenia.
