FREE WORKSHOPS IN THE CLASSROOM

for schools in Vienna and Lower Austria
Free workshops can now be booked directly in the classroom (available dates from April to June 2026). Experienced music educators come directly to the school and use interactive and creative methods to teach students about the many facets of opera, how an opera company works, and what the opera “Carmen” is actually about. Afterwards, the classes are invited to attend a rehearsal to see live how an opera is created.

FREE REHEARSAL VISIT TO “CARMEN” ON JUNE 29, 2026

Perfect activity for Vienna Week or for trips to Vienna (duration: approx. 3 hours)
Immediately before the dress rehearsal begins, there will be a 20-minute moderated introduction on stage about the background of this special Viennese opera production. Artistic director and conductor Joji Hattori, choreographer Jessica Wurzer, and set designer Manfred Waba will share some behind-the-scenes stories and explain what it means to stage an opera as a team. The finale will be the dress rehearsal at the Vienna Opera Summer's open-air venue for all schools in Austria.

There are 2,000 seats available for the dress rehearsal – participation is free of charge, and seats will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Admission at 6:30 p.m., introduction begins at 7:00 p.m., opera begins at 7:45 p.m. (duration: approx. 3 hours)

Melanie Wurzer, including coordination of school projects

Born in Carinthia, she completed her training at the Performing Arts Studios and at the MUK, where she earned her bachelor's degree in solo singing with honors. This was followed by a master's degree at the Opernstudio Biel/Bienne in Switzerland.

For several years, she has been teaching as a children's choir director in the “Monster Friends Program” at numerous schools in Vienna, where she looks after many students.
Since the founding of the Vienna Opera Summer, she has supported the leading team as project coordinator and evening program director, and manages and coordinates the festival's school workshops and rehearsal visits.
