Sofiya Almazova
Sofiya Almázova, a mezzo-soprano, was born in Moscow and began her musical training at the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts. She later continued her studies with Mario Diaz at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg and subsequently honed her skills at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where she studied until 2017.
Her career began in 2010 when she won the Rübezahl Competition in Karpacz, Poland, followed by her success at the Young Artists’ Prize of the Grandi Voci Opera in the Mountains Festival in Salzburg in 2012.
Sofiya Almázova gained her first stage experience while studying in Moscow, taking on various roles in operettas and operas, including Sidonia in Suppé’s *Ten Girls and No Man*, Poligamia in Linckes’ *Lysistrata*, and Dorotea in Donizetti’s *Viva la Mamma!*. In 2013, she was selected for the Salzburg Festival Young Singers Project, where she sang the role of the Third Lady in a children’s production of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” as well as the role of Saint Margaret in Braunfels’ “Jeanne d’Arc – From the Life of Saint Joan.” Sofiya Almázova has also appeared in various productions at the Salzburg Mozarteum, including as Sesto in “La clemenza di Tito,” Ottavia in “L’incoronazione di Poppea,” and Carmen.
Her international breakthrough came in 2017 with her debut at La Scala in Milan, where she successfully portrayed the role of the apprentice in *Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg*. In the years that followed, she continued her artistic journey at the Volksoper Wien, where she appeared in roles such as the Third Fairy in Dvořák’s “Rusalka” and the Sandman in “Hansel and Gretel.”
Sofiya Almázova has an impressive list of stage appearances, including performances in Germany, particularly at the Chemnitz Opera House, where, during the three seasons prior to the pandemic, she played the roles of the 2nd and 3rd , Mercedes in “Carmen,” the Sandman and Hansel in “Hansel and Gretel,” and the Valkyrie Rossweisse in Wagner’s “Rheingold.”
This was followed by a role as Carmen at the Summer Festival in Kittsee, as well as a guest performance in Romania and a tour as Carmen throughout Germany and Austria.
