The two-time Romy Award winner in the "Most Popular Actor" category (2007 & 2008) became known to a wider audience as District Inspector Stockinger, first in the Austrian crime series "Kommissar Rex," and later in the spin-off series "Stockinger." Numerous film and television roles followed, including in "Drei Herren," "Hinterholz 8," "Late Show," "Komm, Süßer Tod," "Franz Fuchs – ein Patriot," and in over 50 other television and film productions. The leading role of Salomon Sorowitsch in Stefan Ruzowitzky's film "The Counterfeiters" (2007), which won Best Foreign Language Film at the 80th Academy Awards, was Markovics's greatest international success to date. In 2009, he co-founded the Austrian Film Academy with other Austrian filmmakers. In 2011, Karl Markovics made his debut as a director and screenwriter with the feature film "Atmen." The film was selected for the "Finzaine des réalisateurs" section of the 64th Cannes Film Festival, won 40 international awards, and won six Austrian Film Awards in 2012. His second feature film, "Superwelt!", followed in 2015, followed by "Nobadi!" in 2019, and the TV crime thriller "Das letzte Problem!", in which he both directed and played the lead role.
